From weekend racing to major regattas, sailing is at the heart of everything we do at Port Lincoln Yacht Club.

Our sailing program offers something for everyone — off-the-beach dinghies, keelboats, junior training, and regular club racing across the season. We also host national events and regattas that attract sailors from across the country.

Classes

  • Our Learn to Sail program is perfect for beginners aged 8 and up. Run by qualified instructors and supported by safety boats, these fun and safe sessions introduce children to the basics of sailing. No experience is necessary — just bring your sense of adventure. Sessions run Saturday mornings during Term 4.

  • The Optimist is a single-handed sailing dinghy, ideal for junior sailors under 10 through to confident youth. These boats help develop core sailing skills in a fun, supported environment. The Club has Optimists available for hire and races are held Saturday mornings.

  • Sailed by two juniors (helm + crew), the International Cadet is the most popular youth class in SA. PLYC sailors have represented Australia at world level, and the class encourages sportsmanship and teamwork. Cadets race Saturday afternoons and one is available for hire.

  • The 420 is a fast-paced two-person dinghy featuring a trapeze and spinnaker, ideal for confident youth sailors. Raced locally and across Australia, it offers an exciting progression for experienced sailors. Club 420s are available and race on Saturday afternoons.

  • The Australian Sharpie is a high-performance three-person dinghy known for its speed and thrill. PLYC has a strong, competitive Sharpie fleet and regularly hosts class events. If you’re keen to crew or skipper, we’d love to hear from you.

  • A popular single-handed dinghy, the Laser is sailed by youth and adults alike. With various rig sizes available, it suits a wide range of sailor weights and experience. The Club has Lasers available for hire and holds weekly races.

  • Keelboat racing is a weekend staple at PLYC, with 8+ boats competing most Saturdays. Newcomers are always welcome aboard, including those with no prior experience. Thanks to Peter Teakle’s generous support, two training keelboats are available for those looking to give it a go.
